Warhammer Online Official Newsletters - 2006 Newsletters

From out of the frigid wastelands of the north, a great warhost marches upon the northern borders of the Empire. Led by a mighty Champion of Tzeentch, the Great Manipulator and Changer of Ways, this army of savage marauders and potent sorcerers is accompanied by otherworldly creatures both strange and terrifying.

For the Empire, already weakened by the ravages of a deadly plague, the situation is desperate. Without aid, the greatest nation of men will fall before the onrushing army of the Dark Gods, and be transformed forever into a domain of the Ruinous Powers.

In our newest monthly feature, we’ll be giving you an exclusive first look at WAR in action! These videos are not highly polished marketing trailers, but clips that contain raw game footage showcasing many of the cool features of WAR.

This month, we feature the first captured footage of Realm vs. Realm® (RvR) combat from our internal Alpha testing. Watch as the Dwarfs and greenskins go toe-to-toe in some exciting melee action!

Karaz-a-Karak is the largest, oldest and most venerated of all the Dwarf holds. Called "Everpeak" in the language of men, this vast, proud city is the capital of the old empire of Karak Ankor, now little more than a fading memory. Within the walls of Karaz-a-Karak are mighty temples to the gods Grungni, Valaya and Grimnir. Here also is the throne of power where sits the High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer, the ancient dammaz grom, or Book of Grudges, always at his side.

The enduring city of the Dwarfs is a place both of great majesty and masterful craftsmanship, and never has it fallen to an invader. Now, in the Age of Reckoning, the greenskin hordes have set out on a path of conquest intended to bring them to the very gates of Karaz-a-Karak and beyond. If the Dwarfs are to see their great hold preserved, they will need every ounce of courage, strength and resolve that they can muster.

This month's featured zone is the neutral territory known as Thunder Mountain. Before they can invade the opposing capital city, the Dwarfs or greenskins will have to control this volcanic land.

With its rivers of molten lava, pits filled with choking sulfurous gas and broken landscape of jagged black rock, Thunder Mountain is a fitting backdrop for the conflict that now rages on its slopes. The landscape is harsh, unforgiving and lethal, much like the warriors of the Dwarf and greenskin armies who wage a bloody battle here. The stakes are high – the victor in Thunder Mountain will open the route of invasion to the enemy capital, and perhaps strike the decisive blow that will decide the outcome of the war between the forces of Order and Destruction.

Unlike the greenskins that spawn from mushrooms (no really, they do!), Dwarfs need to come from somewhere. However, don’t sell these ladies short (doh, bad pun), they are just as mighty on the battlefield as their male counterparts.

The written word is going the way of the dodo as we go hi-tech with our new Production Video Podcasts. Each month, we’ll go behind-the-scenes (but not like Paul does … we have a real video camera!) for an insiders look at the development of WAR.

This month, Deputy Director of Content, Mark Davis, gives us a look at the WAR atlas and shows us the scope of the three battlefronts in the game.

Normally, this is the part of the newsletter where we’d check out the latest batch of behind-the-scenes videos from Design Manager, Paul Barnett, and his magic camera. However, Paul doesn’t have any this month because he thought it more important to work on the game and take the little ones to Disney. Normally, he’d be severely flogged for such a dereliction of duties, but we need him relatively healthy and semi-coherent to work on the game. Instead, he gets off with a light hand slap.

Paul’s video blog will return next month with all-new fun, frivolity, and serious insights into the world of MMO development. Until then, please enjoy these recent video interviews Paul game to GameSpy and the IGN Vault to get your fix.
