"He's a great big Viking who’s gone bad … a crab-clawed hulk! They are dead good! Marauders rock!"

Watch the exclusive video interview with Creative Director, Paul "Don’t Call Me Baby" Barnett, as he delves into the psyche of a Chaos Marauder.

 Bright Wizard

"There is a fire within you! Deep in your mind there is a glowing ember which we will fan to life, and build into a blazing beacon. YOU will be the Empire’s greatest weapon! A Pyromancer! Your fire will incinerate the enemy, and purge the unclean! Do not! Be late! For class!"

- Cindik Antum, Professor of Incendiary Alchemy

Magus
"Let mere Wizards have their simple fire. The flames of Tzeentch are by far the more subtle, the stranger, and all the more powerful for it. Who is more deeply burned? The man who is scorched and recoils, or the man who accepts the flame, thinking it is but warming light?"

– Tor Ravenson, Magus

Last week we invited 40 members of the global gaming press to visit our studios to debut the first Empire and Chaos playable content. It was quite the event with both Senior Producer, Jeff Hickman, and Creative Director, Paul Barnett, in rare form. After forcing the journalists to sit through some short presentations, they got to play through the beginning of both the Empire and Chaos starting zones, as well as engage in some friendly head-to-head competition in two of our new RvR Scenarios. Links to the first articles are below so you can read what the press had to say about their experience with the game and check out new screens, concept art, and plenty of videos of the presentations and RvR session.

This month we profile the Chaos starting zone of Norsca.

In the eyes of most citizens of the Empire, Norsca is a wild and untamed land, full of dangerous creatures both natural and unnatural. Perhaps this is true in the deep north, but along its southern borders where Norsca joins with the northernmost provinces of Kislev, a civilizing influence has taken hold. Here, brave adventurers and resourceful frontiersmen who don’t feel at home in the cities and towns of the south cross the border into Norsca to find their fortune.

For all the settling influence of civilization however, the dangers for which the land is known are quite real. In the northern reaches, barbarian tribes and followers of Chaos are numerous, and their raids frequently strike deep into the southern regions of Norsca. The residents of the villages here sometimes forge pacts with these tribes, intermingling and opening themselves to the influence of the Dark Powers through their alliances. Thus, even the most civilized of Norse are not to be trusted by righteous men. The greatest dangers of Norsca are less commonplace by far, for this is the staging ground of Chaos.

In this month's Production Video Podcast, Senior Designer, Josh Drescher, provides an overview of WAR's tiered zone system with an in-depth look at the Dwarf vs. Greenskins conflict. This includes information about zone layout, the integration of PvE and PvP, and the importance of Victory Points in determining zone control. Josh also details the necessary steps an army must take in order to sack their enemy’s capital city.

Check out the latest WAR Video of the Month to get an exclusive first look at WAR in action! This video is not a highly polished marketing trailer, but contains clips of early, pre-alpha game footage.

On January 25th, we invited 40 members of the gaming press from around the world to experience WAR’s Realm vs. Realm® Scenario combat first-hand. What you are about to witness are the final minutes of a game of “murder ball” in the Marsh Temple scenario located in the Marshes of Madness. This is what RvR is all about!

Join Creative Director, Paul Barnett, for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of WAR. This month Paul stays in a fancy hotel, ponders the EA branding machine, and offers a sneak peak at Bright Wizards, Hell Cannons, Chaos Giants, and more.

"I work with the fixture team, helping to create all the structures and objects for the environments in the game. Crates and barrels are my specialty!"

"I create the layout of the world on the most general, macro level, and my basic job is to draw maps. From these maps, the in-game zones are made. I output these lovely, colorful maps that will probably not see the light of day outside of development, because they are sort of concept art. Sorta like how you never see the blueprints of buildings, but they couldn’t have been built without them."
