“Do not desire the touch of a Maibd, a bride of Khaine, for her life is wholly given to the Lord of Murder, and he is a jealous god, unwilling to share his chosen ones.”

-Ruerl Blackhand, Lord of Har Ganeth

All players begin WAR as part of an army, but they are not your everyday, rank-and-file grunts. No, each player is part of an elite fighting force that will play a significant role in their race’s ongoing war efforts.

The House Uthorin

Of all the noble houses of the Dark Elves, few can boast the power and influence of House Uthorin. As patriarch and ruler of the house, Lord Uthorin is a master of intrigue and politics.  Rumor holds that his eye is fixed firmly upon the Witch King's throne; if that is his ambition, he has wisely kept it hidden, preferring to play the role of loyal advisor.

Long ago, during the catastrophic civil war known as the Sundering, terrible magical energies were unleashed upon the northern kingdoms of Ulthuan. The land was riven by cataclysmic earthquakes and swallowed by the raging waters of the ocean.  All that now remains of these once-proud provinces are a number of broken, twisted islands. The most important of these is the Blighted Isle, and at the dawn of the Age of Reckoning it is here that the Dark Elves' invasion of Ulthuan begins.

The Dark Elves are invaders in Ulthuan and thus have few permanent structures. What buildings they do have show the Dark Elf affinity for spikes and blades, and were built by slaves at the cost of many lives.

Order players will find the Vampire Lord Neborhest’s tower amidst Mourkain ruins in the Marshes of Madness.  Inside they will face many enemies including the long-dead, infamous Orc Warlord, Dork Redeye, risen again as an undead construct, and, of course, the Vampire Lord himself.

Lord Neborhest slammed shut the tome inked with blood and bound in bone.  A cloud of dust rose around him.  He contorted his wrinkled features into a grin full of ironic revelation and uttered, "With the ending of one civilization comes the beginning of another."

With that, the Vampire Lord carefully placed an Orc skull at the center of a large glyph transcribed on the stone floor of his tower.  This was the final element necessary in the necromantic conjuring.  After a deliberate wave of his aged hand, a mass of bones and ethereal energy began to swirl.  Satisfied, he continued. "And with the turn of every apocalypse this world suffers, I live on, forever learning, forever growing my power.  This age shall be no different!"

Warhammer Online is steeped in a quarter century of lore originally crafted around the Warhammer tabletop game, and we are working to bring much of this fantasy world to life indigital form. This month, however, the tables are turned as a setting unique to WAR is brought to life by Games Workshop. The Gates of Ekrund, one of our first RvR Scenarios, has been turned into a tabletop board, and we let loose two of WAR’sdesigners to do battle in front of this Dwarf stronghold!

Dedication doesn’t even begin to describe the lengths to which we’ve seen WAR fans go. It’s almost common nowadays to have fans drive unimaginable distances to attend events, send us gifts such as the infamous life-sized squig, or wait in line countless hours at an event to play a round of RvR. But recently, we were reminded once again how dedicated our fans are when two Witch Hunters attended the 2007 Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle! Carmen & Erick Christagau came in true Witch Hunter style. From purity seals to skulls ‘a’ plenty, they have it all down to the smallest detail. It goes to show that WAR isn’t just a game to our fans: it’s a way of life!

The Age of Reckoning draws near and the armies of Order and Destruction are filling their ranks. More than 440,000 willing participants have registered so far, making this one of the largest ever beta tests for an MMORPG. However, we are always looking for new recruits so sharpen your sword, unleash your mutation, and prepare to meet your destiny on the battlefields of Warhammer Online.

The stories of WAR are full of substance and contain rich details that make role-playing easy. The special effort that has gone into the writing of quests and the journal within WAR is just one of many things that make this game truly special and enjoyable, particularly for role-players and anyone who loves to get into their character!

"The thing about Warhammer is, there is no black and white, good and evil.  There are only shades of grey.  Sure, the Empire was forged by Sigmar ages ago and currently stands against the tide of Chaos but, is the Empire really "good?"  Translating that gritty world of grey versus grey is what intrigues me the most."
